John Stezaker est l’un des principaux artistes du collage photographique moderne et de l’appropriation. Utilisant des photographies anciennes, des photos de films hollywoodiens, des cartes postales de voyage et d’autres imprimés, Stezaker crée des collages séduisants et fascinants de petit format qui présentent des caractéristiques du surréalisme, de Dada et des œuvres d’art trouvées. En évoquant le vaste recueil d’images qu’il a collecté, Stezaker affirme que ce sont les images qui le « trouvent », et non l’inverse. Avec une précision chirurgicale, Stezaker excise, superpose et associe des images distinctes pour créer de nouvelles personnalités, de nouveaux paysages et de nouvelles scènes.
